Spooky Scary Skeletons
I’m big into Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday that doesn’t give you a day off. The dark circles under my eyes simply add to my costume. Society gives us permission to play dress-up, shovel candy in our mouths, get spooky, and not take ourselves so seriously. There’s no correct way to celebrate. Wanna watch a movie by yourself with a bag of Reeses’? Great. Wanna trick-or-treat in the same Batman costume 5 years running? Perfect. Haunted House? Yes. Party? Absolutely. Prepare your pagan alter? You do you.
Like many an acting class I have taken, the best way to go about the holiday is to give yourself permission to have fun. Every time I get an audition, I get excited to play dress up again. I can put down whatever is going on in my day-to-day and play pretend! If you listen to the Audrey Helps Actors podcast, you’re familiar with the 3% statistic. Only 3% of actors earn a living solely from acting. (Ooooh spooky scaaarryyyy!) This makes sense to me. Even the stars are also earning money from sponsorship deals, branding, and executive producer credits on other works. Acting is one part of an entire production. There are also tons of actors that could be right for one role. After reading these haunting facts and facing near-daily rejection, I ask myself one question: am I having fun? The answer, after 24 years of life, is still yes.
